03 / Directed sessions

Live sessions.
In the room or on the line.

Your director can listen in and give notes as we record, whether you’re in the booth or joining remotely. We work the read together, take by take.

A direct line
to the booth.

You can listen to the takes and give notes in real time. If you’re not at the studio, we connect on whatever your production uses: Source-Connect Studio 4 or Pro 3.9, SessionLinkPRO, ipDTL or SonoBus. To listen in and talk back, Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams are often enough.

We agree on the connection beforehand, with the studio or the producer. Then, on the cans, it’s just the lines.

On the line.

  1. SC
    Source-Connect Studio 4 and Pro 3.9

Username: paolobalestri. The studio runs both Source-Connect Studio 4.3 and Source-Connect Pro 3.9. Both ends need Source-Connect installed.

  2. SL
    SessionLinkPRO

I send you a link and you join from Chrome, Edge or Opera, nothing to install. Opus or uncompressed 16-bit PCM (L16); a full local WAV backup of the session if you want it.

  3. IP
    ipDTL, SonoBus

Available on request, if that’s what your studio runs.

  4. TB
    Zoom, Meet, Teams

For talkback and listening alongside, or as the only link when the production prefers it.

From phone patch
to SonoBus.

Remote direction didn’t start with the internet. I’ve been doing it since the nineties, and the line has taken three shapes since then.

  1. Tel.
    Phone patch

The client follows the read on the phone and gives notes by voice. You can hear the intention, not the sound: that comes with the delivery.

  2. ISDN
    ISDN lines

Dedicated lines and a codec at each end: for the first time the director hears studio-quality audio in real time, from another city. Hardware on both sides, and the meter running.

  3. IP
    The internet

Today a good connection is enough. Source-Connect, SessionLinkPRO, ipDTL and SonoBus bring the studio feed to the director’s headphones; Zoom, Meet or Teams take care of the talkback.

Someone listens, says what to change, and we go again until it’s right.

Night
and day.

The studio has no fixed hours, so sessions with the UK or the US are booked around your working day, not mine: early mornings, late evenings, weekends when the deadline needs it.

Native Italian, and English with an Italian accent when that’s the brief.
